The 5-Star System of Measurements
The current system of rating often used
by movie critiques in the news media is very subjective and
inadequate. It is a poor man's lazy system of measurement.
It does not help in making your movies any better.
For example, if we said the rating for your movie is 4 stars
and for another movie it is 2 stars, what good is this information
to you? What are the differentiating factors? Are we even
talking about the movies from the same genre?
At PictureAnywhere, we measure entertainment in decibels
(dB); it is the invention of PictureAnywhere that art can
only be measured logarithmically. If you are familiar with
the Volume knob on your expensive receiver you will notice
that the changes in volumes are given in decibels, this is
because our ears respond logarithmically to the audio volume
changes.
Similarly, if we need to compare movies and if we said the
Entertainment Value of movie A is 12 dB and the Entertainment
Value of movie B is 10 dB, then it is clear that movie A is
better than movie B. But the human brain fails to register
this difference, as the movies are approximately the same.
Since we have a wide range of values ranging from 0 to infinity,
we can see that there is a vast difference between average
and good movies.
We have a system, which clearly tells you the differentiating
factors; is it in Drama, Action, Character, Story, Visual
etc.? Once you know the difference you can make modifications
to your script to better sequence the story. Any good scriptwriter
will tell you that sometimes you have to start writing from
the end.
We are a preproduction company. We collaborate with you so
that you have the control over the Emotions knob. We do not
point you to the stars. Our goal is to differentiate your
product with what is out there.
